What is an Ecomap?
An example of Ecomap

-
Close and strong relationship: Within this, we can see that Peter feels that he has a very strong relationship with his mother, father, and football club & friends. (This is shown by the length of the solid lines).
-
Difficult and stressful relationships: Peter sees himself having equal difficult and stressful relationships with his brother Martin, nerghbours, and Graham, a school bully. (This is shown by the solid lines with scratches and the notes)
-
One-way relationship: Peter perceives that his dentist has a close and strong relationship with him, but Peter doesn't. We can guess that this may be because Peter is fearful about treating teeth.
How Ecomap benefits children's development

-
Enhanced self-awareness:This reflective exercise cultivates self-awareness as children gain insights into their social connections, preferences, and patterns of engagement. Moreover, by visualizing their support networks, children can better recognize their strengths and areas for growth, empowering them to navigate their social environment with confidence and purpose.
-
Identifying Support Systems:By mapping out relationships with family members, friends, teachers, and community resources, children gain clarity on the individuals and resources they can rely on during challenging times. This process not only fosters a sense of security but also encourages children to seek help when needed, promoting emotional resilience and adaptive coping strategies.
-
Improving Communication Skills:Through the collaborative process of discussing and mapping their relationships, children have the opportunity to hone their communication skills. Articulating their feelings, needs, and expectations in the context of their ecomap fosters self-expression and assertiveness.
-
Building Empathy:Ecomaps provide opportunities for children to consider the perspectives and roles of the individuals in their social network, helping them develop a deeper understanding of others' experiences, feelings, and needs. This heightened awareness cultivates empathy and compassion as children recognize the impact of their actions and words on others.

How to create an Ecomap on NearHub Board

-
Create a New Board
Log in to NearHub Board and create a new whiteboard dedicated to the ecomap activity.
-
Set Up Categories
Divide the board into categories such as "Family," "Friends," "Teachers," "Community Resources," etc., to organize the relationships.
-
Add icons or images
NearHub Board allows you to upload icons or images representing individuals or organizations. Encourage students to select and upload icons that best represent the people and groups in their social network.
-
Connect Relationships
Use NearHub Board's drawing tools to connect the icons representing the individual or family with lines, illustrating the nature of their relationships (e.g., support, communication, conflict).
-
Annotate and Reflect
NearHub Board enables annotation, allowing students to add text or comments to their ecomap. Encourage them to reflect on the significance of each relationship and any observations they've made during the process.
